FILM: On August 12, at 8 pm, the Avalon Theatre will screen Ondřej Sokol's film Krásno. Called a "promising debut" and a "dark comedy with a Coen vibe," director Ondřej Sokol's Krásno centers on two childhood friends Michal and Adam who return to their hometown after 20 years and investigate the mysterious death of Michal's mother. The film will be screened in Czech with English subtitles.
The screening is part of the Lions of Czech Film Series in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Synopsis: Two childhood friends Michal (Martin Finger, co-screenwriter) and Adam (played by the director himself), return after 20 years to their rural hometown. Michal’s mother died several years ago and his father passes away on the day of his return. Without knowing the truth about his mother´s death, questions loom in his mind. His stepmother behaves suspiciously, prompting the duo to begin an investigation of their own.
The film is inspired by real events. Krásno is the name of the lake that plays a crucial role in the story.

About the Director:
Ondřej Sokol studied acting and directing at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) and documentary at the Film and Television Academy of the Performing Arts (FAMU). He serves as the main director of the Drama Club in Prague, where he produced performances such as The Lonesome West, Mr. Cushion, and Carnage. He won the Alfred Radok award several times (Talent of the Year, Performance of the Year, Drama of the Year). Krásno marks the director’s feature film debut. He also directed for television. Besides directing, Ondrej Sokol has 17 acting credits to his name for such films as Angels (2014), The Icing (2014), and Dodgeball (2015). He was nominated for a Czech Lion for best supporting actor in 2012 for his role in the film Perfect Days.
About the Lions of Czech Film Series:
This marks the ninth year of collaboration with the Avalon Theatre to present the Lions of Czech Film Series. This film series gives the Washington, DC, community an opportunity to view Czech films that are popular hits in Europe and have received numerous honors and awards at film festivals. Most of the films have received the prestigious Czech Lion Award, the Czech equivalent of an Academy Award. All of the films have limited distribution in the United States.
