CONTEMPORARY DANCE: Cullbergbaletten - Against the Current, Glow
Followed by a Post Show Talk
October 11 in House of Sweden. Doors: 7:00 pm Show 7:30 pm
The starting point for the contemporary dance solo, by Christian Duarte, was the idea of an expedition into the depths of the dancers’ body archives. All dance experiences and movements that origin from choreographies that the dancers have been dancing professionally, from classes, or from dance experiences outside theater and education, are stored and saved in their bodies.
Sometimes these archives are triggered to open up and reveal movements that have not been danced for a while, or even for a long time. Dance that is brought back to live, just by a question, a piece of music, a memory, an image and the body is able to mediate and record movement, and to (re-)produce that movement.
Cullberg Ballet (Cullbergbaletten) has performed all over the world and is an important element in the international presentation of Swedish culture. Next year, 2017, Cullbergbaletten celebrates 50 years of extraordinary ground-breaking contemporary dance, with a history of strong artistic directors, like the founder Birgit Cullberg, her son Mats Ek who recently was presented at Kennedy Center, and by Martha Graham Company, Johan Inger and Carolyn Carlson, to name a few. Since its inception, the stage personalities and technical strength of its dancers have been Cullbergbaletten’s defining characteristics. Cullbergbaletten is part of Riksteatern, Sweden’s National Touring Theatre.
