Behind the Fold - Origami Event and Workshop

  • Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan 1150 18th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20036 United States (map)

The JICC opens its 2016 "Stories in Paper" Origami Exhibition with Presentation by TEDx Speaker and Origami Workshop

The Japan Information & Culture Center (JICC) will open its third annual origami exhibition, Stories in Paper, with internationally celebrated origami artist, architect, and TEDx speaker Giang Dinh, and interactive origami workshop featuring local origami folders Sy Chen and Marc Thompson.

Although origami is typically known for its sharp, precise folds, modern origami has evolved to include a style known as “wet-folding.” Developed by Akira Yoshizawa, this technique involves using water to sculpt damp paper, rather than folding sharp, geometric shapes. Giang Dinh's presentation, Behind the Fold: My Journey with a Piece of Paper, will explore the possibilities of this unique folding technique.

Registration for the opening event is required. Exhibition is free and open to the public, Monday - Friday, 9AM - 5PM until December 15, 2016.

This exhibition is in celebration of World Origami Days, taking place every year between October 24, the birthday of the founder of OrigamiUSA, and November 11, Japan’s Origami Day. You can learn more about World Origami Days on OrigamiUSA's website. This exhibition is supported by OrigamiUSA and Ms. Patsy Wang-Iverson.

Giang Dinh, Architect and Origami Wet-Folder

Giang Dinh was born and raised in Vietnam and currently resides in Virginia. After the Vietnam war ended in 1975, his family had lost everything, including his original childhood origami hobby books. He rediscovered his hobby after coming across these books once more in a bookshop in 1996.

Today, Giang folds origami as a way to create elegant and striking paper sculpture. A minimalist, he uses paper to breathe life into simplistic pieces that capture the soul of the subject.
