Please join the World Affairs Council- Washington, DC as we host Her Excellency Gladys Marithza Ruiz Sanchez, Ambassador of Guatemala to the Unites States. She will address the US-Guatemala bilateral relationship, the Plan of the Alliance for Prosperity, and Guatemala’s relationship with the larger international community. She will also discuss Guatemala’s progress 20 years after its peace accord and what lessons may be drawn to today’s peace agreements in Colombia.
Ambassador Sanchez took up her post in Washington in July 27, 2016. She served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala from 1994 to 1995 and participated in the Uruguay round to establish the WTO. Since then, she has acted as a special adviser to succeeding Ministers of Foreign Affairs. Before her work in foreign affairs, Ambassador Sanchez studied law at Universidad Rafael Landívar and went on to become an independent litigator in civil, constitutional, and trade law cases.
