Over the past centuries, Sri Lanka has been influenced by Indian and European cultures, making it a cultural melting pot and gaining independence from British rule in 1948. For twenty-five years Sri Lanka has embroiled in a Civil War with Tamil rebels, which resolved in the achieving a ceasefire in 2009. Since then, Sri Lanka has sought to build up its economy. The United States has supported and invested in Sri Lanka, improving bilateral trade with a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.
