KōGEI: Contemporary Japanese Art
April 5, 2016 - May 6, 2016 | Monday - Friday, 9AM - 5PM

The Japan Information and Culture Center, in cooperation with the Onishi Gallery in New York, is proud to present KōGEI: Contemporary Japanese Art, featuring ceramics, metalwork, lacquerware, and glass crafts as an ongoing exhibition during the 2016 National Cherry Blossom Festival. This exhibition features over 30 works by contemporary Japanese masters and 13 artists certified by the Government of Japan as Living National Treasures.

WHAT IS KōGEI?

"For centuries, Japanese artists have sought to capture exquisite beauty using meticulous creative techniques, aesthetic sensibilities, and a diverse array of materials. From one generation of artists to the next, their heritage is passed down and reinterpreted through new form and design...

'Kōgei' refers to a class of artistic creations produced with advanced technical skill and refined design aesthetics. Japanese artists develop Kōgei in close association with the needs and conditions of everyday life in cities and prefectures throughout Japan, drawing upon local aesthetics and regional materials to reflect diverse social, cultural, and physical environments."

WHAT IS A "LIVING NATIONAL TREASURE"?

"Living National Treasures" are artists honored by the Government of Japan as preservers of important intangible cultural properties by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. These artists carry social histories and cultural traditions of the past into the present through their traditional creative practices.

During this Kōgei exhibition, 13 Living National Treasures will have works on display. Several of these artists hail from families that have been perfecting their craft for 15 generations.
