Just as Korea's ancient Joseon Dynasty is founded, a priceless treasure bound for Korea from the Chinese emperor is lost at sea. Now, any fool with a ship is on the hunt for the giant whale that swallowed it. Sa-jung (Kim Nam-gil) and his mountain bandits clash with Yeo-wol (Son Ye-jin) and her pirate crew at sea, but they soon face an even bigger threat than each other. It's every scoundrel for him- or her-self in an explosive high seas adventure!

The Pirates, by director Lee Suk-hoon (2014), set a new high water mark for adventure films from Korea. It won distribution to 15 countries at the Cannes Film Festival market and took home major honors at Korea's PaekSang Arts Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards, and Daejong Film Awards.
