The Girl, the Mother and the Demons
Rated PG 11
Director: Suzanne Osten
Suzanne Osten is the iconic feminist Swedish director of theatre and film. She is also an author and a children’s rights advocate, and a pioneer in the field of art for children and young people, fighting for children’s right to experience challenging, brave and relevant art. This film is based on her unconventional mother’s struggles in very conventional middle-of-the-century Sweden in the midst of a continent in bellic turmoil. It is a very moving film about the unconditional love and loyalty of a child towards her parent.
The film was released in spring 2016, and has been subject to extensive public debate, in the aftermath of the Swedish film institute rating the movie PG 15. “The Girl, the Mother, and the Demons” is originally a book by Suzanne Osten which was later staged at Unga Klara. The book’s thematic concerns children who live with mentally ill parents.
There will be a talk with Q&A with Suzanne Osten before the screening of the film.
