Join acclaimed Korean artist Suh Yongsun for a special hands-on workshop Drawing the Cities of Alexandria and Washington, D.C. at one of the DC region's funnest art destination, the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va. Guests can enjoy a reception with the artist, create their own artwork alongside the artist using paint, brush, and collage techniques, and enjoy special performance art by Three EyEs, featuring musician gamin and movement by Jungwoon Kim and Germaine Ingram.
Over the course of three months, Suh will transform the Torpedo Factory's New Project Studio into a workshop and community space for discussions and creativity. He will explore public, social, and political issues in present-day Korea while developing a visual discourse of his time creating in Alexandria. "More and more people are living in cities," Suh says. "We all have memories of the city, but everyone's are different." While cities represent a crowded collage of spaces, from advertising and transportation to architecture and memorials, they are also places to remember one's uniqueness. His work is also on display at the KCC through Jan. 24.
Improvisational trio Three EyEs will use movement, traditional instruments, and voice, to draw Suh Yongsun's color and thematic palate out into various physical spaces, giving a three-dimensional impression of his exhibition. Audiences are invited to connect the movements and sounds to an experience with Suh's work inside the gallery.
