ABOUT BARAJI

The ensemble's name, baraji, is a pure Korean word that refers to the heartfelt care given through one's unconditional support. In Korean traditional music, baraji is also the impromptu singing by accompanists that adds harmony to lead vocals and enhances the color of music. The spirit of baraji is epitomized in Jindo Ssitgim Gut, a traditional shamanistic prayer for the peaceful rest of those who have passed away, through joyful singing and dancing.

Baraji focuses on polishing and reconstructing elements of traditional Korean music, such as harmony, vocals, and improvisation, so that they resonate with modern audiences while still communicating deep emotion. By devoting their music to bringing goodness and comfort to people's lives, Baraji aims to create a more humane world. Their first album, Beasohn, strives to portray a mother's never-ending love and devotion through a series of songs of prayer. Baraji was awarded the 1st Prize at the 5th Myriad Wave Concert in 2012 and was nominated as an APaMM Official Showcase at the Ulsan World Music Festival and Journey to Korean Music, organized by the Korea Arts Management Service.
