Invite  you to a lecture by Professor Nicolas Prevelakis, Harvard University

The burden of modernity: Kazantzakis' insights and their relevance in today’s world

The lecture explores aspects of the cultural politics of the radical Nikos Kazantzakis experienced and reflected upon a series of monumental transformations which took place during his time: the decline of empires and the rise of nations states; the development of a modern economy and the destruction of traditional ways of life; the contestation of traditional religion; and the birth of philosophical currents such as existentialism. Kazantzakis tried to understand the new word that was emerging, combining insights from Western philosophy with a genuine study of Cretan popular culture. This allowed him to formulate a series of philosophical and cultural proposals that are as relevant today as there were then.

The lecture commemorates the 60th anniversary of Kazantzakis' death and is part of the "European Month of Culture" program - #EUMC2017
