SUCH IS LIFE IN THE TROPICS [SIN MUERTOS NO HAY CARNAVAL]
2017 Oscar® Selection, Ecuador
Q&A with actor Daniel Adum Gilbert and post-screening reception sponsored by the Embassy of Ecuador on Sept. 14
Sebastián Cordero (CRONICAS, EUROPA REPORT) crafts a thriller of Shakespearean proportions in this Guayaquil-set tale of greed, betrayal, forbidden romance and political intrigue. Emilio (artist-turned-actor Daniel Adum Gilbert, in his debut role) is a wealthy young man trying to evict the 250 families squatting on land inherited from his father. Promising to help him is Lisandro (Andrés Crespo, CRONICAS), the squatters' self-appointed representative and an unapologetic social-climber. Painting a vivid portrait of Ecuador's largest city, from its luxurious high-rises to its makeshift shacks, Cordero takes a searing look at economic disparity, corruption and the ordinary lives hanging in the balance. Best Director, 2017 San Diego Latino Film Festival; Official Selection, 2017 Miami Film Festival. DIR/SCR/PROD Sebastián Cordero; SCR Andrés Crespo; PROD Torsten Bönnhoff, Bertha Navarro, Arturo Yepez. Ecuador/Mexico/Germany, 2016, color, 100 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
