Cartografías Intimas: un acercamiento a las relaciones interpersonales
Intimate Cartographies: An Approach to Interpersonal Relationships

Cartography and photography are similar in that they both originate from a naturalistic reality. But this representation is not exact, it is mediated. Depending on the technique and means used, the representation will be subjective.

As John Berger refers to in his book Mirar, on Paul Strand’s “photographic moment”: "this is a biographical or historical moment where its duration is not measured in seconds if not in relation to a whole life." The photographic moment is a place, a person, or a situation between people.

The images in this exhibition hold a subtle informative quality, closely connected with the lyrical documentation of Walker Evans, "where many of his landscapes were not documented but created by him." In its subtle, lyrical way of transmitting the cardinal information, the selected images refer to a place that did not always exist, and that is not necessarily a physical place, contributing to the creation of a personal and intimate cartography by the viewer.

The photographs included in this visual essay tend to guide and direct our imagination, to evoke places and emotions. These evocations are in search of that performative moment. They finally transcend that moment, leaving an impression that lasts a lifetime while simultaneously belonging to a specific geography. The photographers represented in Intimate Cartographies were selected from viewings conducted in November, 2015 in Mexico City and Santiago, Chile.
