Cinema Art Bethesda Presents the Award-Winning Swiss Film:
The Divine Order (Die göttliche Ordnung)
Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m.
Join us at Cinema Art Bethesda for a special screening of the award-winning Swiss film The Divine Order (Die göttliche Ordnung)by Swiss screenwriter and film director Petra Volpe and get a glimpse into the women’s rights battle in Switzerland.
The Divine Order is set in 1971 in Switzerland, where, despite the worldwide social upheavals of the previous decade, women were still denied the right to vote. When unassuming and dutiful housewife Nora (played by Marie Leuenberger, winner of the Best Actress in an International Narrative Feature award at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and the Swiss Film Award 2017) is forbidden by her husband to take a part-time job, her frustration leads to her becoming the poster child of her town’s suffragette movement. Her newfound celebrity brings humiliation, threats, and a potential end to her marriage, but, refusing to back down, she convinces the women in her village to go on strike . . . and makes a few startling discoveries about her own liberation.
The Divine Order won the 2017 Swiss Film prize in the Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Performance in a Supporting Role categories.
The film will be screened in German with English subtitles.
